Honda City Timing Chain — Does It Need Replacing?
Honda City uses a timing chain (not a belt) — theoretically lifetime, but high-mileage cars can experience stretch. Know the signs.

Unlike some engines that use a timing belt requiring periodic replacement, the Honda City uses a timing chain. Chains are designed to last the life of the engine — but 'designed to' and 'always will' are different things, especially at high mileage.
Does the Honda City timing chain need replacing?
In most cases, no — if oil changes have been done on time with quality oil. The chain's primary enemy is dirty or low oil. Cars that have had irregular oil changes or have gone through oil-burning periods are more at risk of chain stretch or tensioner wear.
Warning signs of a stretched chain
A rattling or chattering noise from the engine on cold start (the first few seconds after starting) that disappears once the engine warms up.
Check Engine light with camshaft position or variable valve timing fault codes.
Replacement cost if needed (Malaysia)
Timing chain kit replacement (chain, tensioner, guides) is a major engine job: RM1,200–RM2,500 all-in. This is why regular on-time oil changes with quality oil are so important — the chain replacement cost makes prevention far cheaper than cure.
