Honda City Aircond Compressor Failure & Replacement Cost
Signs of a failing Honda City compressor and replacement costs in Malaysia. Repair or replace — which makes sense?

The Honda City aircon compressor is the most expensive single component in the aircon system. Knowing the failure signs early can prevent the whole system from being damaged.
Common signs of compressor failure
Aircon blows completely warm, or starts cold then immediately turns warm — the compressor clutch has disengaged or the internals have failed.
Metallic scraping or grinding noise when the aircon is switched on — compressor bearing wear.
Engine load feels abnormal (higher fuel consumption but aircon isn't cold) — compressor seized or clutch slipping.
Replacement cost (Malaysia reference)
Brand-new OEM compressor: RM900–RM1,500 (excluding labour). OEM-grade aftermarket: RM450–RM800. Labour: RM150–RM250.
When replacing the compressor, always replace the receiver drier and recharge the refrigerant at the same time — installing a new compressor without replacing the filter risks contaminating the new unit.
Repair vs replace — when does repair make sense?
If only the clutch coil or clutch plate is worn, replacing just the clutch assembly costs around RM200–RM350 — the compressor itself doesn't need to be touched.
If the compressor is internally seized or oil-contaminated, full replacement is the only option. We recommend a diagnostic check first before committing to any repair.
