Honda City Cooling Coil — Clean or Replace?

The Honda City evaporator (cooling coil) sits inside the cabin aircon unit and is responsible for absorbing heat to produce cold air. Over time it accumulates mould and dust, causing musty smells and reduced airflow.
Typical evaporator symptoms
Musty smell when the aircon is first turned on — especially noticeable on the first start of the day.
Airflow gets weaker over time — even at maximum fan speed it feels insufficient.
Refrigerant slowly dropping with no obvious external leak — evaporator pinhole leak.
Cleaning the evaporator (best for mould and weak airflow)
A professional antibacterial cleaner is injected through the blower duct, left to work, then flushed out. This removes most mould and restores airflow. Cost: RM150–RM250. Best combined with a new cabin filter for maximum effect.
Replacing the evaporator (best for leaks or severe blockage)
Replacing the Honda City evaporator requires removing the dashboard — it is one of the most complex aircon repairs. Full cost (OEM part + labour): approx RM850–RM1,400 all-in. Recommend replacing the receiver drier and refrigerant at the same time.
Prevention
Replacing the cabin filter every 10,000–15,000 km is the cheapest, most effective way to prevent evaporator mould build-up.
Before parking, switch off the aircon 2–3 minutes early and run only the fan — this dries the evaporator and reduces mould growth.
