Honda City vs Toyota Vios Malaysia — Which Should You Buy?
Honda City and Toyota Vios head-to-head — fuel economy, maintenance cost, reliability and value for Malaysian buyers.

Honda City and Toyota Vios are the two most consistently popular non-national sedans in Malaysia. Both are reliable, affordable to run, and well-supported by parts and workshops. The choice between them often comes down to personal priorities.
Engine and performance
Honda City GN2 (1.5T): up to 122hp — noticeably quicker than the Vios. City GM6 (1.5L NA): similar power to the Vios. Toyota Vios (1.5L NA): 107hp — adequate for daily use, smooth and refined. The City turbo wins on performance; the Vios wins on smooth, fuss-free delivery.
Maintenance cost and reliability
Both are among the most reliable non-national sedans in Malaysia. The Toyota Vios has a slight edge on long-term reliability — particularly the older Vios with a conventional 4-speed or 7-speed automatic, which has fewer known issues than the City's CVT.
Maintenance cost is similar between both models at independent workshops. Honda parts are slightly more expensive on average, but both are easy to service anywhere in Malaysia.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Honda City if: you want more performance (especially the GN2 turbo), prefer the more modern interior, or do a mix of city and highway driving. Buy the Toyota Vios if: you prioritise rock-solid long-term reliability with the fewest surprises, or prefer a simpler automatic gearbox over a CVT.
