Honda City Carbon Cleaning — Throttle Body & Intake Guide
Honda City rough idle, rising fuel consumption or sluggish acceleration? Carbon build-up is a common cause. When to clean and what it costs.

Carbon deposits build up on the throttle body and intake valves over time, especially in cars that do a lot of short-distance driving. On the Honda City, the symptoms are gradual — you may not notice how much the car has changed until after the cleaning.
Symptoms of carbon build-up
Rough idle — the engine shakes more than usual at a standstill. Higher-than-normal fuel consumption. Sluggish initial acceleration (the car hesitates before pulling away).
Types of carbon cleaning
Throttle body cleaning: the throttle body is removed or accessed directly, and built-up carbon is cleaned off with throttle body cleaner. Most effective for idle issues. Cost: RM80–RM150.
Induction system clean (walnut blasting or chemical): targets intake valves and ports. More relevant for GN2 turbo models with direct injection. Cost: RM200–RM500 depending on method.
How often is it needed?
There is no fixed interval — it depends on how the car is used. City cars that mostly do short trips may need throttle body cleaning at 40,000–60,000 km. The symptoms above are the best guide.
