Honda City Brake Fluid — Why Change Every 2 Years?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture, lowering its boiling point and causing brake fade under heat. Honda City brake fluid change guide.

Honda City Brake Fluid — Why Change Every 2 Years?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time. As water content rises, the fluid's boiling point drops. Under hard braking, this can cause brake fade (the pedal feels spongy and stopping distances increase). In Malaysia's heat, this happens faster.

Replacement interval

Every 2 years, regardless of mileage. This is non-negotiable — brake fluid absorbs moisture even if the car is barely driven. Honda recommends DOT 3 for most City models.

DOT 3 vs DOT 4 — what's the difference?

DOT 4 has a higher dry boiling point than DOT 3 and is safe to use in cars specced for DOT 3 — it absorbs moisture slightly faster but offers a safety margin. Never use DOT 5 (silicone-based) in a Honda City.

Cost in Malaysia

Brake fluid flush and refill (all four corners): RM80–RM150. This is cheap insurance for one of the most safety-critical systems on the car.
