ISTA vs Generic OBD on 5 Series
The 5 Series has even more proprietary BMW systems than the 3 Series — the Integral Active Steering (G30), adaptive suspension module, and advanced ADAS sensors all require ISTA to read fault codes. A generic OBD reader may show zero fault codes while ISTA reveals 8–12 active issues in these subsystems. Before buying a used 5 Series, always insist on an ISTA scan.
