BMW 5 Series Common Problems Malaysia — F10/G30
F10 520i N20 has the same timing chain issue as F30. N55 535i/550i: charge pipe failure and VANOS rattles. G30 B48/B58: electric water pump and thermostat failure, EGR cooler clogging. Cooling system is the most recurring theme across all 5 Series generations.

F10 Known Issues by Engine
- F10 520i N20: same timing chain risk as F30 — cold-start rattle is a walk-away sign
- F10 535i N55: charge pipe splitting under boost — loss of power + whistling
- N55 VANOS solenoids: clogging causes rough idle and lost power
- Electric water pump: both N20 and N55 prone — critical failure point
G30 B48/B58 Issues
G30 is a significant improvement over F10. The main watch items are the electric water pump (B48: all-electric, no mechanical backup), EGR cooler on B48, and VANOS on B58 at higher mileage. The G30 runs better longer when oil changes are done at 10,000 km in Malaysia — EGR clogging is directly linked to long oil intervals.
