Smart alternator with IBS — same as 3 Series. Voltage regulation failure most common. F10 N55 alternator more prone to failure due to heat from turbo proximity. IBS reset via ISTA mandatory. Malaysia repair RM 1,000–2,200.

N55 Alternator Heat Exposure
The F10 535i N55 alternator sits adjacent to the twin-scroll turbocharger. Heat soak from the turbo shortens alternator lifespan compared to a naturally-aspirated engine. The IBS sensor monitors battery current and reports to the DME. A failing alternator that cannot maintain 14.2–14.8V under load will cause unexplained battery drain and electrical issues. Test alternator output via ISTA before replacing a battery that keeps going flat.
