Toyota Hilux Used Car Buying Checklist (Malaysia)
12-point checklist before buying a used Hilux in Malaysia — DPF status, engine smoke, rust, diff oil condition, frame integrity and accident history.

Used Hilux buying in Malaysia is a minefield — plantation units may look clean but have hard lives, and modified trucks hide damage under lift kits. Use this 12-point checklist before committing.
Engine & Diesel System
- 1. Cold start: no white smoke after 30 seconds (failed glow plug or head gasket)
- 2. DPF warning light off — check DPF history with scan tool
- 3. No blue/black smoke under acceleration
- 4. Check oil filler cap — white or creamy residue = coolant in oil (head gasket)
Drivetrain
- 5. Engage 4H and 4L on a flat area — both should engage without grinding
- 6. Listen for whining from rear diff at 60+ km/h (indicates neglected diff oil)
- 7. Check AT fluid colour — should be pink/red, not dark brown
Body, Chassis & Rust
- 8. Inspect chassis rails (C-section frame) with a torch — any holes = serious issue
- 9. Check rear leaf spring hangers for rust and cracks
- 10. JPJ ownership check — plantation or company trucks can have unusual usage history
- 11. Check for fresh undercoating (hiding rust repair or accident damage)
- 12. Request PUSPAKOM B7 (light commercial vehicle inspection)
