The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps soot from the diesel exhaust. It self-cleans through regeneration — but Malaysia's stop-and-go traffic prevents the engine from reaching the high temperatures needed for passive regeneration, causing premature DPF clogging.
Understanding DPF Regeneration
- Passive regeneration: happens automatically at sustained highway speeds (above 80 km/h for 30+ min)
- Active regeneration: ECU injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature to ~600°C
- Forced regeneration: technician-initiated via scan tool when DPF is >80% full
DPF Warning Light — What To Do
- Amber light: take a 30-minute highway run above 80 km/h immediately
- If light stays on after highway run: book forced regeneration at workshop (RM 60–100)
- Red DPF light or limp mode: do not drive — tow to workshop immediately
