The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions. Over time, carbon deposits from diesel combustion clog the valve, causing rough idle, black smoke and power loss.
Symptoms of Blocked EGR Valve
- Rough or lumpy idle at warm temperature
- Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration
- Reduced power and throttle response
- Check engine light — P0401 (EGR flow insufficient)
Clean vs Replace
- Chemical clean (soaking in carb cleaner, ultrasonic): RM 100–200
- EGR valve replacement (OEM): RM 400–700 + labour RM 100–180
- Clean first — most EGR issues are carbon build-up, not valve failure
