Front and rear differential oil is the most commonly forgotten service item on a Hilux — and also the most expensive to fix when neglected. Diff oil lubricates the ring-and-pinion gears that transfer torque to the wheels.
Specifications
- Front and rear diff: API GL-5 80W-90 (conventional or synthetic)
- Change interval: every 40,000–50,000 km (more frequent for off-road or heavy loads)
- Total diff oil cost per change: RM 80–130 (front + rear, includes labour)
Symptoms of Neglected Diff Oil
- Whining or howling noise from rear axle at speed
- Vibration felt through floor when accelerating
- Clunking from diff area on sharp turns (limited-slip diff)
- Metal particles in old oil = immediate diff rebuild needed (RM 1,500–3,000)
