Case 1: AN130 DPF Clogging at 55,000 km
Vehicle: 2021 Hilux AN130 2.4L, 55,000 km. DPF warning light on. Owner had been doing only short 5–10 km city trips — DPF never got hot enough for passive regeneration. We performed forced DPF regeneration via scan tool (RM 80), advised owner on weekly highway runs. DPF cleared completely. No parts cost. Total: RM 80.
Case 2: AN120 Turbo Oil Leak at 120,000 km
Vehicle: 2018 Hilux AN120 2.8L, 120,000 km. Blue smoke on acceleration, oil consumption increasing. Inspection confirmed turbo compressor housing oil seal leaking. Investigation showed owner had been extending oil change intervals to 15,000 km. We rebuilt the turbo (RM 950, reconditioned unit) and did an immediate oil change to fresh DL-1. Advised 7,000 km change interval. No recurrence at 6-month follow-up.
Case 3: AN120 Diff Whine — Neglected Diff Oil
Vehicle: 2017 Hilux AN120 2.4L, 95,000 km. Loud whining from rear at highway speeds. Service history showed diff oil had never been changed. We drained the rear diff oil — it was near-black with visible metal particles. Metal particle contamination meant gear scoring had already occurred. Required rear diff rebuild (RM 2,200 parts + labour). This single service omission turned a RM 100 service item into a RM 2,200 repair.
Common thread: most serious Hilux problems are caused by maintenance omissions, not component failures. DPF, diff oil and turbo oil are the three most commonly skipped items — and the three that cause the most expensive repairs.
