Toyota Alphard H40 VVT Service — 2.4T Carbon Cleaning Guide
H40 Alphard's direct injection 2.4T engine accumulates intake valve carbon that causes rough idle and power loss. When to service the VVT solenoid, when to do walnut blasting, and the right oil interval for the turbo.

The H40 Alphard's T24A-FTS 2.4L turbocharged engine uses direct injection — fuel does not wash the intake valves on each intake stroke, unlike the H30's port injection 2AR-FE. Over 60,000–80,000 km, carbon deposits build up on intake valves, reducing airflow and causing rough idle. H30 owners are largely unaffected by this — it is specific to H40 direct injection owners.
Symptoms of VVT and Carbon Issues
- Rough idle at cold start — carbon buildup restricts airflow on specific cylinders
- Rattling on cold start (VVT actuator chatter): oil sludge in VVT solenoid causes P0011/P0012 codes
- Reduced low-RPM torque — carbon on intake valves restricts the air charge at low engine speeds
Service Recommendations for H40 Owners
- Engine oil: change every 5,000 km (not 10,000 km) — turbo heat demands fresher oil to keep VVT passages clean
- VVT solenoid cleaning at 60,000 km: RM 150–250 — prevents P0011/P0012 codes and cold-start rattle
- Walnut blasting (intake valve carbon cleaning) at 80,000–100,000 km: RM 800–1,500
- Use 0W-20 SP full synthetic only — maintains VVT actuator response at cold start
