Toyota Alphard Used Car Checklist Malaysia — What to Inspect Before Buying

Buying a used Alphard? Check: power sliding door function, hybrid battery health, CVT shudder, dual-zone A/C, suspension (air ride on H40), and full service history. Complete checklist inside.

Toyota Alphard Used Car Checklist Malaysia — What to Inspect Before Buying

A used Alphard can be excellent value — if you buy the right one. The Alphard's high purchase price means sellers may gloss over maintenance history or hide developing faults. This checklist covers the unique risks of buying a used Alphard in Malaysia.

Power Sliding Door — Test Both Sides Repeatedly

Open and close each power sliding door at least 5 times. Listen for: grinding (worn rollers), hesitation (weak motor or dirty sensors), incomplete closure. Try to gently resist the door closing with your hand — a healthy motor will push past light resistance. If either door hesitates even once during 5 cycles — budget for roller and potentially motor replacement: RM 300–1,200 depending on severity.

Hybrid Battery Health Check (Hybrid Variants)

Request a hybrid battery health report from the seller — or better, have it checked at a workshop that can read Toyota hybrid battery data with Techstream or equivalent. Key metrics: battery capacity remaining vs original (should be above 70% for a well-maintained unit), any individual cell voltage deviations. Warning signs during a test drive: frequent engine-on periods even in slow traffic, hybrid system warning indicator, sudden fuel consumption spikes. A degraded hybrid battery that needs full replacement costs RM 8,000–15,000 — factor this into your offer price.

Full Service History & Dual A/C Check

Demand full service history — an Alphard without records is a gamble on ATF, CVT fluid, and inverter coolant condition. During inspection: run both front and rear A/C at maximum fan speed for 10 minutes. Both should blow equally cold. A musty smell from rear vents signals mouldy rear evaporator — chemical wash RM 100–150. Check the hybrid battery cooling fan duct under the second-row seat — blocked vents indicate the battery has been running hot. Also check all power window operation, the moonroof (if fitted) and seat adjustment mechanisms.
