Toyota Alphard Suspension Noise — Clunk, Thud, Squeak Diagnosis
Different suspension noises point to different worn parts. Clunk over bumps, squeak when turning, thud at low speed — complete diagnosis chart and repair cost guide for H30 and H40 Alphard.

Alphard's MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension (H30), or pneumatic air suspension (H40), produces distinctive sounds when components wear. At 1,900+ kg kerb weight with a long wheelbase, the Alphard places significant stress on its suspension bushings and ball joints. Diagnosing the sound correctly saves time and avoids replacing the wrong parts.
Sound Diagnosis Chart
- Clunk/knock over bumps or potholes → control arm bushings or front ball joints — inspect urgently
- Squeaking/creaking when turning slowly at low speed → sway bar end links or strut mount bearing
- Thud or thump on rough road at low speed → shock absorber or strut internal piston wear
- Rattle from rear over small bumps → rear anti-roll bar end links (common and inexpensive to fix)
- Grinding when turning full lock → CV joint boot split or CV joint wear
H40 Air Suspension Specific
- Hissing sound: air line or valve block leak — do not drive long distances if the car sags on one side
- Compressor running too often: air bladder leak causing constant re-inflation
- Clunking from air strut: internal piston wear or upper mount bearing failure
Repair Cost Reference
- Control arm bush replacement: RM 200–450 per side (parts + labour)
- Sway bar end links: RM 80–150 per side — one of the cheapest suspension fixes
- Shock absorber H30: RM 350–700 per corner; H40 air strut: RM 1,200–2,500 per corner
