Toyota Alphard Inverter Coolant — Hybrid-Exclusive Maintenance Guide

Alphard hybrid has a separate inverter coolant circuit that most owners and workshops overlook. Neglecting it leads to inverter overheating — a RM 5,000+ repair. Full service guide.

Toyota Alphard Inverter Coolant — Hybrid-Exclusive Maintenance Guide

The inverter coolant circuit is the most commonly overlooked maintenance item on the hybrid Alphard — even many authorised dealers don't proactively service it. But neglecting the inverter coolant can lead to inverter overheating, which is a RM 5,000+ repair on a hybrid Alphard.

What the Inverter Coolant Does

The power inverter in the hybrid Alphard converts DC power from the high-voltage battery into AC for the motor-generators, and vice versa. This process generates substantial heat — and the inverter has its own liquid cooling loop separate from the engine. The inverter coolant absorbs this heat and dissipates it through a dedicated small radiator. If this coolant degrades, loses its corrosion inhibitors, or the circuit develops air pockets, the inverter temperature climbs — triggering warnings and eventually damage.

Service Interval & What to Use

Toyota specifies inverter coolant change at 160,000 km or 8 years — whichever comes first. Use only Toyota Genuine Inverter Coolant or Toyota SLLC (the composition is compatible, but verify with your workshop). Never use standard green antifreeze or aftermarket coolant — they can corrode the aluminium inverter housing. At every engine oil service, ask your workshop to visually check the inverter coolant reservoir level and colour. If it appears brown or has particles, change it immediately regardless of interval.
