Toyota Alphard Carbon Cleaning — Does 2AR-FE Actually Need It?

Carbon cleaning is frequently sold as a necessary service for all petrol engines — but for the Alphard's 2AR-FE, the situation is quite different from direct-injection engines that genuinely need regular cleaning. Understanding this distinction will save you money.
Port Injection vs Direct Injection — Why It Matters
The 2AR-FE in H30 Alphard is a port-fuel-injected (PFI) engine — fuel is sprayed into the intake port before the valve. This fuel mist washes over the back of the intake valves at every cycle, preventing significant carbon build-up. Direct injection (GDI) engines spray fuel directly into the cylinder — never washing the intake valves, which causes heavy carbon deposits over 80,000–100,000 km. On the 2AR-FE: carbon cleaning is rarely needed before 150,000 km if you use quality oil and change it on schedule. The H40 2.4T T24A-FTS uses direct injection — carbon cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km is more justified.
