Toyota Alphard A/C Not Cold — Front & Rear Dual-Zone Troubleshooting

Alphard dual-zone A/C complaints come in two forms: both zones not cold (compressor or refrigerant issue) or only the rear zone not cold (rear evaporator issue). Correctly identifying which scenario saves money by avoiding unnecessary front-system work.
Both Zones Not Cold — Compressor or Refrigerant
If both front and rear A/C zones are not cold simultaneously, the issue is upstream of both evaporators: refrigerant leak, failed compressor, clogged condenser or blocked expansion valve. Alphard uses R134a refrigerant (H30) or R1234yf (H40). Check: is the compressor clutch engaging when A/C is switched on? If not — compressor or electrical issue. If yes but still warm — refrigerant leak or clogged condenser. Regas cost: RM 150–250. Compressor: RM 1,800–3,500.
Front Cold But Rear Not Cold — Rear Evaporator
If front A/C blows cold but rear does not — the rear expansion valve, rear evaporator or rear blower motor is the issue. The most common cause in Malaysian Alphard units: rear evaporator clogged with mould (owners only service the front unit and forget the rear). Chemical wash the rear evaporator: RM 100–150. If the rear blower motor is seized: RM 300–500 for replacement. Replace rear cabin filter at the same time — always do front and rear together.
