Good news for Honda Civic owners: the 1.5T VTEC Turbo uses a timing chain, not a timing belt. This means no scheduled replacement — but chains can still rattle or fail if the engine is starved of clean oil.
Signs of chain wear
A rattling noise on cold startup that disappears after 10–15 seconds is normal oil pressure build-up. If the rattle persists after warm-up, or if you get a P0016/P0017 cam-to-crank correlation fault code, the chain or tensioner needs inspection.
Timing chain inspection: RM80–RM150 diagnostic fee. Replacement (chain + tensioner): RM800–RM1,500 inc. labour — but this is rare on well-maintained Civics and usually only on units beyond 200,000 km with neglected oil changes.
