Toyota Rush Common Problems in Malaysia (2024)

Toyota Rush 1.5L CVT is compact and practical — but CVT judder, suspension knocking and A/C odour are recurring issues. Here's what Malaysian Rush owners need to know.

Toyota Rush Common Problems in Malaysia (2024)

Toyota Rush is one of Malaysia's most practical compact SUVs — 7 seats, high ground clearance, and a frugal 1.5L engine make it a family favourite. The 2018–present generation uses a naturally-aspirated 2NR-VE engine mated to a 4-speed automatic. Here's what our workshop sees most often from Rush owners.

1. 4-Speed Automatic Transmission Judder

The Rush uses an older-generation 4-speed automatic (not a CVT like Vios). At low speeds — especially when the engine is warm and pulling away in slow traffic — some Rush owners notice a judder or hesitation between 1st and 2nd gear. Cause: degraded ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and a gearbox that's sensitive to fluid quality. Fix: full ATF change with Toyota ATF T-IV or Dexron III equivalent every 40,000–60,000 km. Cost: RM 180–250.

2. Front Suspension Knocking Sound

Rush sits higher than a sedan and uses a MacPherson strut front suspension. In Malaysian road conditions — potholes, speed bumps, and uneven surfaces — the front strut top mounts and stabiliser bar end links wear faster than on lower vehicles. Symptoms: knocking or rattling from the front when going over bumps. Fix: replace strut top mounts and stabiliser links. Cost: RM 200–350 per side. Expected life: 60,000–80,000 km in Malaysia.

3. Air-Con Odour and Weak Cooling

The Rush cabin filter is located behind the glove box and is easy to overlook. A blocked cabin filter dramatically reduces A/C airflow. In humid Malaysian conditions, a dirty filter accelerates mould growth on the evaporator. Symptoms: musty smell, weak cooling despite compressor running normally. Service: replace cabin filter every 15,000–20,000 km (RM 30–50); evaporator clean when mould smell appears (RM 150–200).

4. Engine Oil — Don't Skip 5,000 km Changes

The 2NR-VE in the Rush is a solid engine, but it benefits from strict oil change discipline. Toyota recommends 10,000 km intervals with synthetic oil — but in Malaysian driving conditions (traffic, heat, short trips), we recommend every 5,000 km using 5W-30 or 0W-20 full synthetic. Neglected oil changes lead to sludge build-up around the VVT-i mechanism, causing rough idling and oil pressure warning at higher mileages.
