Toyota Fortuner Timing Chain Guide
Fortuner 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV both use timing chains — no belt replacement schedule. Oil quality is the single most important factor for chain longevity.
Fortuner Timing Chain — Oil Is Everything
Both 2GD-FTV and 1GD-FTV use timing chains — no scheduled belt replacement. The chain is designed for engine lifetime use. However, these high-pressure diesel engines demand clean oil for the VVT system and chain tensioner. Cold-start rattle (the chain clattering for 3–5 seconds before oil pressure builds) is the first warning sign of a stretched chain or weak tensioner. Change oil every 10,000 km maximum — 8,000 km in severe service. Timing chain kit replacement if needed: RM 3,000–5,000.
