X1 Generations

E84 Warning — N20 Risk
The E84 X1 (2009–2015) used the N20 4-cylinder engine — the same problematic timing chain design that plagues the F30 3 Series and F25 X3 of the same era. If considering an E84 X1, the cold-start chain rattle test is mandatory. Any rattle lasting more than 1 second on cold start means the chain has already stretched. The F48 is a far safer used purchase than the E84 because it uses the improved B38/B48 family.
