BMW X1 uses blue HT-12 coolant only. B38 3-cylinder runs higher per-cylinder heat — inspect expansion tank each visit. B48 electric water pump — coolant work requires ISTA to clear fault codes after. Replace every 4 years or 80,000 km. Malaysia cost RM 180–300.

X1 Cooling — Monitor B48 Water Pump
The B48 xDrive20i and xDrive25i X1 use an electric water pump with the same failure risk as the G20 3 Series. Request ISTA efficiency monitoring from 40,000 km. The B38 sDrive18i uses a conventional belt-driven pump — lower risk, lower replacement cost (RM 350–600). If the water pump warning light comes on, stop driving immediately — overheating a turbocharged engine causes head gasket failure within minutes.
