F48 X1 Known Issues
- B38 (sDrive18i): same 3-cylinder vibration at idle as F20 116i — normal character
- B48 (xDrive20i/xDrive25i): electric water pump failure at 60,000–100,000 km
- F48 DCT 7-speed: clutch judder in city traffic — same issue as F20 M135i
- xDrive20i/25i: transfer case MTF-LT-2 and differentials not tracked by CBS
F48 — FWD Platform Surprise
Many buyers do not realise the F48 X1 (2016–2023) is front-wheel-drive based — it shares the UKL platform with the F40 1 Series and Mini Countryman, not the rear-wheel-drive platform of the X3/X5. The xDrive variants add rear drive capability via a Haldex-type coupling but the primary architecture is front-biased. This means the X1 does not need the same rear differential servicing volume as the X3/X5 but still requires transfer case and rear diff fluid changes on xDrive models.
