Yaris uses a timing chain — no scheduled belt replacement. Regular 0W-20 SP oil changes every 10,000 km are all that's needed to keep the chain healthy.
Yaris Timing Chain — Lifetime Part with One Condition
Both 2NR-FKE and 2ZR-FXE use timing chains (no belt). The chain is designed to last the engine's life — IF oil changes are done every 5,000 km with 0W-20 SP. The 2ZR-FXE hybrid engine is particularly chain-life-sensitive because it starts and stops frequently (each EV-to-petrol transition causes an oil film break on the chain). Regular oil changes keep the tensioner healthy. If a cold-start rattle develops: diagnose immediately — chain guide or tensioner replacement before full chain replacement is less costly.
