Toyota Vellfire H40 VVT Service — 2.4T Direct Injection Carbon Cleaning
H40 Vellfire's 2.4T direct injection engine builds up intake valve carbon from 60,000–80,000 km. VVT solenoid cleaning, walnut blasting and the correct 5,000 km oil interval prevent cold-start rattle and power loss.

The H40 Vellfire uses the same T24A-FTS 2.4L direct injection turbocharged engine as the H40 Alphard. Direct injection means fuel does not wash the intake valves — carbon builds up over time, restricting airflow and causing rough idle. H30 Vellfire owners with the 2AR-FE port injection engine are largely unaffected; this guide is for H40 2.4T owners.
VVT Carbon Symptoms in H40 Vellfire
- Rough idle at cold start — carbon buildup restricts specific cylinders
- Cold-start rattle (VVT actuator chatter) — oil sludge in VVT solenoid; generates P0011/P0012 codes
- Reduced torque below 2,000 RPM — intake valve carbon restricts the air charge at low speeds
H40 Vellfire VVT Service Schedule
- Engine oil: every 5,000 km for H40 2.4T — shorter interval prevents sludge in VVT passages
- VVT solenoid cleaning at 60,000 km: RM 150–250 — prevents fault codes and cold-start noise
- Walnut blasting (intake valve decarbonisation) at 80,000–100,000 km: RM 800–1,500
- Only 0W-20 SP full synthetic — the correct grade minimises carbon and keeps VVT actuators clean
