Toyota Vellfire 8AT Shudder — ATF Diagnosis and Fix
Vellfire shudder at 40–60 km/h is almost always ATF fluid degradation — the same as Alphard. Fresh Toyota ATF WS drain-and-fill resolves 80% of cases. Full diagnosis, cost and torque converter escalation guide.

Vellfire shares the same 8-speed automatic (petrol H30/H40) and e-CVT (hybrid) as the Alphard — and the same shudder at 40–60 km/h is the most common transmission complaint. Degraded ATF fluid is the cause in the vast majority of cases. An ATF drain and refill with Toyota ATF WS resolves most shudder without any other work.
Why ATF Degrades in Malaysian Conditions
Malaysia's stop-and-go traffic and KL–highway driving cycles put the torque converter lock-up clutch through repeated engagement cycles at high temperatures. After 60,000 km of this, the ATF friction modifiers that allow smooth TCC engagement are depleted — hence the shudder. Toyota says ATF WS is a lifetime fill; our workshop experience says 60,000 km is the realistic change interval in Malaysian conditions.
Diagnosis and Fix
- Scan for P0741 (TCC slip), P0740, P2757 before assuming the worst
- ATF colour: red = good; dark brown or burnt = change immediately
- ATF full drain and refill (7.8L Toyota ATF WS, 8AT): RM 280–400
- Hybrid e-CVT Transaxle Fluid FV replacement: RM 180–250
- Persistent shudder after fresh fluid: torque converter replacement — RM 2,500–4,000
