Vellfire 2AR-FE timing chain has no replacement interval — but poor oil discipline causes stretch after 150,000 km. Cold-start rattle is the key warning sign. What to do before it becomes catastrophic.

Both 2AR-FE (H30) and T24A-FTS (H40) use a timing chain — not a timing belt. No scheduled timing belt replacement needed. However, timing chains can stretch and develop slack if oil changes are neglected. On the T24A-FTS turbo engine, oil quality is especially important — turbocharged engines run hotter and degrade oil faster, and degraded oil fails to lubricate the chain tensioner adequately. If you hear a rattle from the engine on cold start (first 2–3 seconds), have the timing chain inspected.
- Timing chain: no scheduled replacement — inspect at 100,000 km if oil changes were irregular
- Chain rattle on cold start = oil pressure issue or worn tensioner — diagnose immediately
- Timing chain kit replacement (if needed): RM 2,500–5,000 including labour
