Toyota Vellfire Suspension Noise — Clunk, Thud and Squeak Diagnosis
Different Vellfire suspension sounds point to different worn parts. Clunk over potholes, squeak when turning, rear rattle — complete diagnosis guide for H30 MacPherson and H40 air suspension variants.

Vellfire shares the same suspension architecture as the Alphard — MacPherson front struts and double wishbone rear (H30), or pneumatic air suspension (H40). At approximately 1,900–2,100 kg kerb weight, the Vellfire places the same high loads on its suspension bushings and links. The sportier exterior also attracts drivers who push the car harder, accelerating bushing wear.
Suspension Noise Diagnosis by Sound
- Clunk over bumps/potholes → control arm bushings or ball joints — inspect immediately
- Squeak or creak turning slowly → sway bar end links or upper strut mount bearing
- Thud at low speed on rough road → shock absorber piston internal wear
- Rear rattle over small bumps → rear anti-roll bar end links (common, inexpensive to fix)
- Grinding at full steering lock → CV joint wear or torn CV boot
H40 Air Suspension — Additional Checks
- Hissing: air line or valve block leak — check if the car sags overnight
- Compressor cycling frequently: air bladder leak causing constant refill
- Air strut clunk: piston or upper mount wear — H40 air strut replacement: RM 1,200–2,500 per corner
Repair Cost Reference
- Control arm bushings: RM 200–450 per side
- Sway bar end links: RM 80–150 per side
- H30 shock absorber: RM 350–700 per corner
