Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Common Problems in Malaysia (2024)
Land Cruiser Prado TXL150 petrol and diesel — DPF clogging, diesel injector wear, suspension bushing replacement and 4WD differential servicing are the key maintenance items for Malaysian Prado owners.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TXL150 (2010–present) sits between the Fortuner and the full Land Cruiser — offering genuine ladder-frame off-road capability with a more refined daily driving character. Available in Malaysia as 2.7L petrol (1GR-FE) or 2.8L diesel (1GD-FTV), the Prado has a loyal following among outdoorsy families and plantation owners. Here's what our workshop sees most often.
1. DPF Clogging (Diesel 1GD-FTV)
Prado diesel owners who do mostly city driving — school runs, office commutes, weekend outings in KL — face the same DPF clogging risk as Hilux and Fortuner owners. The 1GD-FTV engine's DPF needs high-temperature regeneration via sustained highway driving above 80 km/h. Prevention: one 30-minute highway run monthly. If the DPF warning light appears: forced regeneration at our workshop (RM 150–200). Severe blockage requires DPF removal and cleaning (RM 400–700).
2. Diesel Injectors — Quality Fuel is Non-Negotiable
Prado 1GD-FTV uses high-pressure common-rail injectors — the same precision components as the Hilux and Fortuner diesel. Dirty fuel or skipped diesel fuel filter changes (should be every 30,000 km) lead to injector fouling, rough idle and black smoke. At our Puchong workshop, Prado injector issues are almost always traced to owners using non-branded diesel from rural stations. Always use Shell V-Power Diesel or Petron Diesel Max. Injector cleaning: RM 400–700. Replacement: RM 500–900 per injector.
3. Front & Rear Suspension Bushings
Prado uses a double-wishbone front suspension and coil-spring rear — more refined than leaf springs. The rubber bushings throughout the suspension deteriorate in Malaysia's heat and UV exposure, especially on high-mileage units or those used off-road. Symptoms: clunking over bumps, imprecise steering feel, pulling to one side. Common failure points: front upper and lower arm bushings (80,000–120,000 km), rear lateral rod bushings, front strut mounts. Full suspension bush service: RM 800–1,500. Always do a 4-wheel alignment after bushing replacement.
4. Full-Time 4WD — Transfer Case & Differential Oil
Prado's full-time 4WD system includes a centre differential, front differential, rear differential and transfer case — all requiring their own oil. Toyota specifies changes every 40,000 km for differentials; most owners have never serviced them. Old differential oil leads to whining during turns and premature wear. Full drivetrain oil service (centre diff + front diff + rear diff + transfer case): RM 350–550. Prado owners who do regular off-road use should service at 20,000 km intervals.
5. Petrol 1GR-FE — Timing Belt Replacement
Unlike the diesel 1GD-FTV which uses a timing chain, the 2.7L 1GR-FE petrol engine in the Prado uses a timing belt — this MUST be replaced at 100,000 km or 7 years, whichever comes first. A snapped timing belt causes catastrophic engine damage (bent valves, damaged pistons) with repair costs exceeding RM 5,000–10,000. At our workshop, we also replace the water pump, idler pulleys and tensioner at the same time — these are accessible during the timing belt job and add minimal cost (RM 200–400 extra) while preventing a second teardown.
