Innova Turbocharger — Care and Common Failures
The 1GD-FTV uses a Denso VNT turbocharger with variable vanes. It is extremely reliable with proper oil maintenance but problematic when oil changes are neglected or poor-quality diesel oil is used. Common failures: actuator malfunction (variable vane sticking), oil seal failure (blue/grey smoke), turbo whistle (bearing wear). Prevention: use 5W-30 DL-1/C3 and change every 10,000 km. Always let the engine idle 60 seconds before shutdown after highway driving — this allows the turbo to cool before oil flow stops.
