Toyota Innova Common Problems in Malaysia (2025)

Toyota Innova AN140 2.8L diesel — DPF clogging, EGR carbon, turbo oil leaks and gearbox judder are the top Malaysian complaints. Complete guide for Innova owners.

Toyota Innova Common Problems in Malaysia (2025)

Toyota Innova is the go-to 7-seat MPV for Malaysian families who want reliability and space. The AN40 (2005–2015) and AN140 (2016–present) Reborn have served the nation faithfully — but they come with diesel engines and automatic transmissions that need attentive maintenance. Here's what we see regularly.

1. Automatic Transmission Slipping or Jerking

The AN40 Innova 5-speed automatic and AN140 6-speed automatic are both durable, but poor gearbox oil maintenance is the number-one cause of failure we see. Symptoms: delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive, slipping between gears, jerking at highway speeds. Fix: full gearbox oil change with Toyota ATF WS every 40,000–60,000 km. If the gearbox has never had a fluid change above 100,000 km, do a partial change (not a full flush, as old ATF can mask worn seals). Cost: RM 200–350.

2. Air-Con Performance Drop

Innova's 7-seat cabin is large — a weak A/C is immediately noticeable by back-row passengers. Common causes: blocked cabin filter reducing airflow; low refrigerant from slow leaks; dirty evaporator restricting cooling. Service: cabin filter replacement every 20,000 km (RM 40–60), refrigerant top-up with leak check (RM 80–150), evaporator chemical clean (RM 200–300). For AN40 units, also check the rear A/C blower motor — it's a wear item by 100,000 km.

3. Diesel Carbon Build-Up (1KD-FTV / 2KD-FTV)

AN40 Innova uses the 1KD-FTV (3.0L) or 2KD-FTV (2.5L) diesel. These are robust engines but carbon deposits in the intake manifold and EGR valve accumulate over time, causing rough idling, hard starting and reduced power. Service: EGR valve cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km (RM 150–250). Intake manifold carbon clean: RM 300–500. Always use quality diesel fuel — Petron Diesel Max or Shell V-Power Diesel — to slow carbon build-up.

4. Timing Chain (1GD-FTV on Reborn AN140)

The AN140 Innova Reborn uses the 2.8L 1GD-FTV engine with a timing chain (not a belt — no scheduled replacement). However, neglected oil changes allow the chain to stretch. Symptoms: rattling sound from the engine on cold start, timing error codes. Fix: timing chain tensioner replacement and possibly new chain and guides. Cost: RM 800–1,500 depending on extent of wear. Prevention: strictly use 5W-30 diesel oil and change every 5,000 km.
