Toyota Camry Timing Chain — When to Replace? (Malaysia)
Camry 2AR-FE and M20A-FKS both use timing chains. Chain stretch warning signs, replacement triggers and Malaysia workshop costs.

Both 2AR-FE (XV50) and M20A-FKS (XV70) Camry engines use timing chains — not timing belts. Chains are designed to last the life of the engine, but neglected oil changes can cause chain stretch and timing issues.
Timing Chain Problem Symptoms
- Rattling noise from engine on cold start (first 5–10 seconds)
- Check engine light with timing-related codes (P0011, P0012, P0016)
- Rough idle and poor performance
- Engine hesitates on cold acceleration
When Does It Need Replacing?
- Timing chains rarely need replacement before 200,000 km with regular oil changes
- Key trigger: oil change neglect (extended intervals or wrong viscosity)
- Timing chain + tensioner + guides replacement: RM 1,500–2,500 (major job)
