Toyota Camry Common Problems in Malaysia (2024)
Toyota Camry XV50 and XV70 are ultra-reliable — but high-mileage units develop CVT shudder, weak A/C and suspension clunks. Here's what Malaysian Camry owners need to watch for.

Toyota Camry is Malaysia's benchmark executive sedan — the XV50 (2012–2017) and XV70 (2018–present) both earn a reputation for going 200,000 km without major drama. That said, we see the same handful of issues at our workshop every month. Here's the honest breakdown.
1. CVT Shudder at Low Speed
The XV50 Camry with the 6-speed automatic is generally smooth, but XV70 models on the Direct Shift CVT can develop a low-speed shudder — especially noticeable when pulling away in traffic. Root cause: degraded CVT fluid. Toyota's recommendation is 'lifetime fill', but in Malaysian heat and stop-go traffic, the fluid breaks down by 80,000–100,000 km. Fix: full CVT fluid exchange using Toyota WS or equivalent synthetic. Cost: RM 250–350.
2. Air-Con Weak Cooling (Cabin Filter + Evaporator)
Camry has a large cabin and a correspondingly large evaporator. When the cabin air filter is clogged — which happens fast in Malaysian urban air — airflow drops and the evaporator can develop mould. Symptoms: weaker cooling than before, musty smell when A/C first turns on. Fix: new cabin filter every 15,000–20,000 km; evaporator chemical clean when mould smell appears. Cost: RM 30–50 (filter) + RM 180–250 (evaporator clean).
3. Suspension Clunk (Strut Mounts & Stabiliser Links)
XV50 Camry units above 100,000 km commonly develop a clunking or knocking sound from the front suspension — especially over speed bumps or uneven roads. The culprits are almost always the front strut top mounts (rubber becomes brittle) and the front stabiliser bar end links. Both are inexpensive parts; labour is straightforward. Cost: RM 200–350 per side including parts and labour.
4. Engine Oil Consumption (2AR-FE)
Some XV50 Camry 2.0L 2AR-FE engines have a known tendency to consume more engine oil than expected — around 0.5L per 5,000 km. This is within Toyota's acceptable limits but surprises owners used to zero consumption. Always check oil level between services. If consumption is above 1L per 5,000 km, have valve stem seals and piston rings inspected.
5. Power Window Motor Failure
XV50 Camry rear door power window motors are a known wear item by 120,000–150,000 km. Symptoms: window moves slowly, stops halfway, or won't respond. The regulator cable can also fray. Replacement cost: RM 180–280 per window (motor + labour). OEM Toyota parts recommended; aftermarket motors tend to fail within 12 months.
Workshop Tip
At our Puchong workshop, Camry XV70 owners often come in thinking they have a gearbox problem, when the actual culprit is degraded CVT fluid. A fluid exchange at RM 280–350 solves it completely without any mechanical rebuild. If your Camry shudders below 40 km/h, try the fluid first before panic-buying a rebuilt gearbox.
