Mercedes-Benz S-Class Timing Chain — M276/M278/M256 Guide Malaysia
S-Class M276, M278 and M256 engines all have more robust timing chains than older M271. Regular MB-spec oil changes prevent premature stretch. Signs of timing chain issues in large Mercedes engines.
S-Class V6 (M276) and V8 (M276/M177) engines all use timing chains. No belt replacement needed. The V6 and V8 have more complex chain routing than the 4-cylinder C-Class/GLC engines. Cold-start rattle, camshaft timing codes (P000A/P000B) and oil pressure warnings are the key signs of chain wear.

- V6 timing chain (tensioners + guides + chain): RM 3,500–6,000
- V8 timing chain (more complex, higher labour): RM 5,000–9,000
- Prevention: use correct spec oil, never exceed 10,000 km oil change interval on V8
