AIRMATIC air suspension is standard on all S-Class W222 and W223. There is no conventional steel spring option. AIRMATIC maintenance is the most critical ongoing expense for S-Class owners. The system includes four air springs, one compressor, height sensors, valve blocks and the ECU.
AIRMATIC Component Lifespans
- Air springs: 8–12 years / 100,000–150,000 km in Malaysian conditions
- Compressor: 8–12 years — often fails around same time as air springs
- Height sensors: 10–15 years — can fail from corrosion at link joint
AIRMATIC Replacement Costs
- Air spring (per corner, OEM): RM 1,500–2,500
- Compressor (OEM): RM 3,500–6,000
- Height sensor (per corner, incl. coding): RM 600–1,000
- Valve block replacement: RM 1,200–2,000
AIRMATIC Preventive Care
Park on flat ground where possible — parking on a slope overnight stresses one air spring more than the others. Never lower the ride height setting to 'very low' for extended periods. Check that height sensors are free of corrosion at annual service. Early compressor failure diagnosis (runs longer than 2 minutes after start) can prevent air spring damage.
