The head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head, keeping combustion gases, oil, and coolant in their separate passages. A blown head gasket is one of the most serious engine failures — and one of the most expensive to repair. In Malaysia's climate, overheating events are the most common cause.
Warning signs — catch it early
- White smoke from the exhaust (sweet-smelling — coolant burning in the combustion chamber)
- Milky, frothy oil on the dipstick or underside of the oil cap
- Coolant level dropping repeatedly with no visible external leak
- Engine overheating, especially in KL traffic — temperature gauge in red zone
- Bubbles in the coolant reservoir when engine is running (combustion gases entering cooling system)
Repair cost — and why you should not delay
Head gasket replacement at 4M Car Care ranges from RM 1,800–4,500 for most cars, including head skimming (machining the warped head flat) if required. Delaying the repair turns a RM 2,000 job into a RM 5,000+ engine rebuild.
If you suspect a head gasket issue, stop driving immediately. Every kilometre driven overheating warps the cylinder head further and may crack the block — turning a repairable situation into a write-off.
