Buying a used GLE? AIRMATIC condition and 9G-Tronic ATF history are the two items that can make or break a used GLE purchase. A GLE with healthy AIRMATIC and serviced transmission is an excellent car; one with failing AIRMATIC and overdue ATF will cost RM 10,000+ in immediate repairs.
AIRMATIC Inspection
- Park on level ground for 30–60 min, return: all four corners must be at same height
- Cold start: listen for compressor — should stop within 60–90 seconds if system is healthy
- XENTRY AIRMATIC scan: check all four height sensor readings and compressor output pressure
Transmission & Engine
- 9G-Tronic judder test: pullaway from standstill in D — any shudder = ATF service needed
- ATF history: any W166 without ATF record at 80,000+ km = immediate ATF flush
- Carbon cleaning history: any GLE over 60,000 km — budget RM 800–3,500 depending on engine
- Transfer case fluid: check at 80,000+ km
Budget Reality
A used GLE with unknown service history should be budgeted as follows before use: ATF flush RM 550–700 + AIRMATIC inspection + XENTRY scan RM 200–300 + any AIRMATIC components needed. Total immediate spend can be RM 1,000–15,000 depending on condition. Price the car accordingly or walk away.
