Mercedes-Benz GLE Common Problems Malaysia — W166/V167
AIRMATIC air suspension failure, 9G-Tronic judder, W166 rear differential leaks and V167 MBUX software bugs are the top GLE complaints in Malaysia. Premium SUV issues explained by generation.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is the flagship SUV in Malaysia — larger and more capable than the GLC, with AIRMATIC standard on all variants. Two generations: W166 (2015–2019) with M276 V6 or M278/M177 V8; and V167 (2019+) with M176 V8, M264 inline-4 or M256 inline-6. AIRMATIC and 9G-Tronic ATF are the primary maintenance priorities on both.
AIRMATIC Compressor & Air Spring Issues
All GLE variants — W166 and V167 — come with AIRMATIC as standard. Compressor lifespan in Malaysian conditions is 8–12 years / 100,000–150,000 km. Symptoms: car leans to one corner overnight, 'AIRMATIC Visit Workshop' warning, continuous compressor run time. GLE AIRMATIC repair cost is similar to S-Class due to the larger air spring volume. Compressor: RM 3,500–6,000. Air spring: RM 1,500–2,800 per corner.
9G-Tronic Judder
GLE uses 9G-Tronic with MB 236.15 ATF. Same judder mechanism as GLC and S-Class — low-speed friction modifier depletion. Particularly common on W166 GLE 400 (M276 V6) with no ATF service history. Full ATF flush resolves in most cases. Interval: 40,000–60,000 km. Cost: RM 550–700.
Transfer Case & 4MATIC Issues
All GLE sold in Malaysia are 4MATIC AWD. The transfer case uses separate fluid that is factory-filled for life — but in Malaysian off-road and heavy towing use, replacement at 80,000–100,000 km is beneficial. Symptoms of worn transfer case fluid: vibration on tight turning radius or noise under heavy load. Transfer case fluid change: RM 400–600.
