ISTA vs OBD2 Scanners — The Difference
Generic OBD2 scanners read basic engine fault codes but miss 80% of what ISTA (BMW's official diagnostic platform) covers on the 7 Series. ISTA accesses all control modules: transmission adaptation values, air suspension calibration, battery charging profile, EPB piston retraction, CBS reset, and closed-loop coding. Many owners are misled by shops using generic scanners that show 'no faults' when BMW-specific codes are present.
