Smart Charging System Explained
The 4 Series uses a smart alternator that only charges during deceleration (regenerative charging), not during steady cruising. This saves fuel but means the battery must be in good health to store energy effectively. A weak battery causes the alternator to overwork — leading to premature alternator failure. Always address battery health before replacing an alternator, and always register the battery after replacement.
