BMW 4 Series Common Problems Malaysia — F32/G22
F32 420i/428i N20: timing chain stretch — same critical risk as F30 3 Series. Cold-start rattle = do not buy. G22 420i/430i B48: electric water pump failure, carbon buildup on intake valves. G22 M440i B58: largely reliable, charge pipe and cooling are the watchpoints. F36 Gran Coupe adds weight on same drivetrain.

4 Series Common Problems
The 4 Series shares its platform and engines with the 3 Series — so all 3 Series common issues apply. F3x (F32/F33/F36, 2014–2020) with N20 carries the timing chain risk. G2x (G22/G23/G26, 2021+) with B48/B58 is significantly more reliable. Additional 4 Series-specific notes: the F33 Convertible's power soft-top mechanism needs annual lubrication; the F36 Gran Coupe rear door seals can harden and leak in hot Malaysian climate.
Malaysia Owner Tips — 4 Series
N20 timing chain risk (F3x 2014–2020): the most important pre-purchase check — cold-start rattle lasting more than 10 seconds indicates chain stretch (P0016/P0017). Full chain kit replacement RM 3,500–5,500 at an independent BMW specialist. The G2x (2021+) B48/B58 is reliable but check the electric water pump (EWP) — failure causes overheating with little warning. Malaysian climate tip: F36 Gran Coupe rear door seals dry-rot in 3–5 years — water ingress into boot area is common. F33 Convertible owners should flush the soft-top drainage channels every 6 months to prevent ECU water damage.
