BMW 1 Series Timing Chain Malaysia — F20 N20 Critical
F20 118i/120i N20: cold-start chain rattle = chain stretch — same issue as F30 3 Series. Walk away from any rattling F20. Chain kit RM 3,000–5,000 Malaysia. F40 B38/B48: improved chain design, much lower risk. Keep oil at 10,000 km Malaysia schedule. N20 chain is the #1 used-car risk for F20.
Chain — 1 Series Engines
- B38 (116i/118i): improved design — low risk
- B48 (120i): same low risk as G20/G01
- N55 (M135i): dual-row chain — robust
- 1 Series has no N20 engine — no high chain risk models in 1 Series
1 Series — No N20 Risk
The 1 Series was never fitted with the N20 engine — it uses B38, B48, or N55 depending on the model. This means the timing chain risk that affects so many F30 3 Series and F25 X3 buyers does not apply to the 1 Series. The B38 and B48 chain designs are far more robust than the N20. This is a significant advantage when buying a used 1 Series — one major risk category is simply not present.
