Toyota Prius 12V Battery Guide Malaysia
Prius 12V auxiliary battery failure completely prevents startup — even if HV battery is fine. Replace every 3–4 years in Malaysia's heat.
Prius has TWO batteries: the HV NiMH traction battery (covered above) and a small 12V auxiliary battery. The 12V is CRITICAL — it powers the car's computers and initialises the HV system. A dead 12V means the car won't start even if the HV battery is fully charged.
12V Battery Replacement
- Prius 12V is a small 28Ah–40Ah unit in the boot — replace every 3 years proactively
- Recommended: Panasonic or Yuasa 12V Prius-specific battery — correct spec, fits the boot tray
- Replacement cost: RM 200–320 installed — do not use a cheap generic battery in the Prius
