1VD-FTV V8 diesel uses a timing chain. Infrequent oil changes are the main cause of chain stretch — cold-start rattle is the warning sign.
The 1UR-FE V8 petrol uses a timing chain (no replacement interval). The 1VD-FTV V8 diesel also uses a timing chain. Both are designed to last the vehicle's lifetime with proper oil maintenance — but chain stretch can occur above 200,000 km on neglected vehicles.
Timing Chain Warning Signs
- Rattling on cold start that clears after 30 seconds: early chain stretch — investigate immediately
- P0016/P0017 fault codes: cam/crank correlation error — timing chain or VVT-i actuator issue
- Full timing chain replacement on V8: RM 3,000–5,000 — major job requiring engine removal
