Toyota Harrier Carbon Cleaning Malaysia — M20A-FKS GDI
M20A-FKS is direct injection (GDI) — carbon builds faster than port injection. Inspect intake by 50,000 km.

Harrier 2.0L petrol uses the M20A-FKS engine with Toyota's D-4ST system — a dual-injection setup combining both direct injection (DI) and port injection (PI). This is a key advantage over pure-DI engines: the port injectors wash the intake valves with fuel on every cycle, dramatically slowing carbon buildup. The Harrier 2.5L hybrid (A25A-FXS) also uses D-4ST. As a result, walnut blasting is rarely needed before 120,000–150,000 km — a significant improvement over European DI engines that require it at 60,000 km.
Carbon Cleaning Guide
- M20A-FKS / A25A-FXS (D-4ST): carbon inspection recommended at 120,000 km — walnut blast if significant deposits found
- Symptoms of heavy carbon: rough idle, slight hesitation at 2,000–3,000 rpm, minor power loss
- Cost if needed: RM 1,200–1,800 — less common than on pure-DI engines; most Harrier owners at 100,000 km never need it
- Using Techron or top-quality fuel (PETRONAS Primax 97 / RON 97) at least monthly helps keep ports and DI injectors clean
