The Corolla Cross Hybrid uses an electric A/C compressor — a fundamentally different design from the belt-driven compressors on conventional cars.
Electric vs Belt-Driven Compressor
Electric compressor advantage: A/C works even when the engine is off (common at red lights in EV mode). It runs on 288V DC from the hybrid battery. Disadvantage: uses specialised POE (polyol ester) refrigerant oil — not the PAG oil used in conventional compressors. Wrong oil destroys the electric motor windings.
