2NR-VE uses a timing chain — no scheduled replacement. Keeping up with oil changes is the most important thing you can do to protect it.
Both Avanza engines (3SZ-VE and 2NR-VE) use timing chains with no scheduled replacement — but neglected oil changes are the chain's main enemy.
3SZ-VE Chain Warning
The VVT-i system on the 3SZ-VE is particularly sensitive to sludge. If oil changes are stretched beyond 8,000 km with semi-synthetic, the VVT-i actuator and chain tensioner are the first to suffer. Cold start rattle is the key warning sign. Chain + VVT-i actuator replacement: RM 1,500–2,500.
